While dental implants and customized implant restorations can beautifully reconstruct a smile affected by missing or severely damaged teeth, adequate jawbone structure is necessary to successfully support dental implants and provide long-lasting results. If you have experienced jawbone loss—either as a result of tooth loss, gum disease, or trauma—our experienced prosthodontists may be able to perform state-of-the-art bone grafting procedures to rebuild lost volume. Once the full integrity of your jawbone structure is intact and healed, you may be an eligible candidate for the dental implant treatment plan that is right for you.

Dental bone grafting is a procedure designed to rebuild strong, healthy jawbone bone mass. Most often this procedure is performed to create stable support for a dental implant, which requires a solid foundation of bone tissue for long-lasting success. Jawbone atrophy can occur for a variety of reasons and bone grafting can be used to increase the height and/or width of your jawbone, as well as fill defects and depressions in the bone structure.
Who Is a Candidate for Bone Grafting?
During an initial appointment with one of our prosthodontists, you will undergo a full examination to determine your dental challenges, diagnose any conditions which require treatment, and determine a plan for achieving your ultimate goals. Part of the exam will involve diagnostic imaging to evaluate your jawbone structure and identify whether bone grafting is necessary to rebuild missing volume prior to treatment. Individuals who are suitable for the bone grafting procedure must be in good overall health, capable of healing properly, and free of infection in the bone and soft tissue. Cessation of smoking and the use of other tobacco products is advised both before and after the procedure to support adequate circulation for optimal results.
How Is the Dental Bone Grafting Procedure Performed?
Dental bone grafting is performed with sterile bone particles that come in a bottle. These particles are thoroughly compressed into the graft site, molded to the proper shape and then protected by a resorbable collagen membrane. Sedation techniques may be used if you should desire additional relaxation and comfort during the treatment. Over time, the new bone should ideally fuse with the existing jawbone to create a thoroughly integrated bond.
What is Recovery from Dental Bone Grafting Like?
Following dental bone grafting you can expect some swelling and discomfort for the first two to three days. Your personal experience will depend upon your unique rate of healing, sensitivity, and the details of your procedure. Medications will be provided to help alleviate discomfort as you heal. Your prosthodontist will provide you with post-operative instructions that you should follow closely in order to make the recovery process go as smoothly as possible. Typically, it takes several months before the final result of the grafting procedure is reached, though each patient’s timeline is different.
